What is included in an Egypt desert safari tour?

EgyVacations Egypt desert safari packages include a private licensed guide, 4WD transport from Cairo (or from your hotel), accommodation in a desert camp or oasis hotel as specified, entrance fees to listed sites, and meals as described in the itinerary. We send a clear line-by-line breakdown before you book, so you know exactly what is and is not included. International flights to Egypt are not included.

The main Western Desert destinations EgyVacations operates to are: the White Desert (north of Farafra), Bahariya Oasis, Siwa Oasis, and Farafra. The most common itinerary is the 2-night Bahariya + White Desert route departing from Cairo. Siwa requires a minimum of 2 nights and is usually sold as a 3-night trip. Destinations can be combined and customized based on your travel dates and the number of days you have.

For most travelers, yes — it is consistently one of the highest-rated experiences on any tour of Egypt. The chalk rock formations are unlike anything else in Egypt or the wider region. The quality of the experience depends heavily on two things: whether the camp is actually inside the national park (not on its edge), and the guide’s quality. Both are non-negotiable on EgyVacations departures.

October through April is the most comfortable period for desert travel. Daytime temperatures in the Western Desert range from 15°C to 28°C during this window — cool enough to walk comfortably and cold at night, which is part of what makes the desert camping experience distinctive. June through August brings extreme heat: daytime temperatures regularly exceed 40°C and nights remain hot. Some travelers do summer desert trips for the lower prices, but it significantly limits how much time you can spend outside between 10 am and 4 pm.

Yes, when properly organized. All EgyVacations desert safaris use licensed guides and maintain 4WD vehicles equipped for desert travel. Our guides carry communication equipment and have experience navigating and camping in the Western Desert. We do not take clients to politically restricted areas or regions listed in the Egyptian government’s travel advisories. Before every departure, our Cairo team provides a full briefing on what to expect and what to bring.

Yes. Desert camping is one of the most engaging experiences for children who are old enough to handle the physical aspects — typically ages 6 and up. The landscape, the camp setup, the stars, the early morning light — children respond strongly to all of it. Our guides are experienced in adjusting the pace and content for families. We recommend the Bahariya + White Desert 2-night route as the most accessible family option.

For an October–April departure: layers are essential — desert nights are cold even when days are warm. Bring a fleece or light down jacket, breathable trousers, a sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and comfortable closed-toe shoes or hiking boots. A head torch is useful in camp. Avoid sandals for dune walking. Our Cairo team sends a full packing list with every confirmed booking.
